Care and Handling of Fine Art
Curr_Events

While Hawaii is a wonderful place to live, when it comes to displaying art it is often harsh and challenging. Even with proper framing, environmental conditions such as strong sunlight, salt air, and high humidity can damage works of art over the years. To avoid this, we recommend the following:

no sunLIGHTING
Avoid hanging in direct sunlight or near fluorescent lighting, which also contains ultraviolet rays, harmful to paper, certain inks and paint colors.  Only special conservation glass and Plexiglas products reduce damage from light.

HANGING
Frames should be hung with the use of picture hooks.  Hanging a picture from a nail allows the frame to more easily shift from level and increases the danger of the frame being knocked off the wall.  If the picture is heavy, two hangers side by side should be used.  When hanging frames on brick or masonry walls, the use of special molly screws or masonry hangers may be required.  Do not hang art near fireplaces or other heat sources.

HEAT & HUMIDITY
temperaturehumidityKitchens and bathrooms are poor environments to hang paper borne or valuable artwork.  Rooms in which the relative humidity exceeds 70% should be dehumidified or air-conditioned to discourage the formation of mold and mildew.  Conversely, relative humidity below 30% may cause artwork to become brittle and is to be avoided as well.  A daily, extreme, fluctuation in temperature and humidity is very hard on any artwork.

CLEANING  Glass Plus
Plexiglas requires special care so it does not scratch or discolor by having household cleaners used on the surface of it.  'Glass Plus' is recommended for both glass and Plexiglas – spray a small amount on a soft, clean, lint free cloth, NOT on the glazing directly.  Wipe gently until all smudges are removed.  The picture frame itself should be dusted only.

INSPECTION
Mag glassPeriodic visual inspection of framed artwork is VERY IMPORTANT to make sure art and framing materials remain in good condition.  Every 3 – 5 years the piece should be taken apart and cleaned – or at the very first sign of mold/mildew on the inside of glazing, or on the artwork itself, the piece should be taken into a frame shop immediately for closer inspection.
